December 7, 2015

This week we started a new reading unit on visualizing while reading. We started by learning how our five senses help us create pictures in our mind. We played a game where we listened to various sounds and talked about the pictures we had in our mind and the things we thought of when we heard those sounds. We also did a similar game with taste. We all tasted chocolate chips and shared our mental images and memories associated with that taste. Our favorite had to be a smell test. The students had the opportunity to smell 6 different distinct smells. They were asked to write down their thinking after visiting each smell station and then we shared our mental images before finding out the actual smell.

Some of the smells were enjoyed more than others. :)

This week we also made our Countdown to Christmas chains. We made them in an AB pattern of red and green. I hope the kids are enjoying taking one link off each night to countdown to Christmas.

A few fun turkeys are still hanging around our room.

On Friday we had a guest from the MU Extension project to teach the kids about the importance of proper hand washing. The kids learned all about germs and how germs can make us sick. By coughing/sneezing in a tissue or elbow it helps in the spread of germs. They learned how hand washing helps protect against germs. Each student was given a small amount of lotion to rub onto his/her hands. The lotion was used to represent germs. The students were unable to see the lotion, just like they are unable to see germs. After application, they were able to look at their hands under a black light, which allowed them to see the "germs." Then they were asked to wash their hands and then they were able to recheck their hands to see if they were able to wash away the "germs." Many students noticed they did not wash well in the palms of their hands. Hopefully this will help keep our class healthier over the germ filled winter months.

Stay tuned for next week to learn about our Gingerbread Man adventures!
