The last two weeks, we have had so much fun reading various versions of The Gingerbread Man. With each story, we focused on the characters, the refrain of the gingerbread man and what happened when the gingerbread man encountered the fox.
We made really awesome gingerbread boys and girls. Thank goodness they didn't run away!
We wondered why the gingerbread man always popped out of the oven and ran away.
After reading many versions, we noticed that every time the gingerbread man approached the river, he let the sly fox trick him into taking a ride on his back. Then, the fox would always eat him. We decided to test what would happen if he tired to swim across the river instead of getting on the fox's back.
When we realized that the gingerbread man was doomed either way, we decided to design and build bridges to help him cross the river, The students were given a variety of tools and needed to design a bridge that would cross the length of the river and would hold the weight of our gingerbread man cookie. They needed to share the tools in a small group and could work independently or with a partner.
