We are readers!
Kids come to school and they want to learn to read, but feel as though they can't. We start by recognizing familiar words they already know.
The environmental print above is one way your child will begin to read. He/she will soon start making connections that /w/ that starts Walmart is the same /w/ that begins win and wet. He/she will recognize that /ch/ in Chick-fil-a is the same as in children and chin.
We also begin by learning how to read the pictures to tell the story. In addition, we work on finding sight words we know.
Currently the students are selecting books from large group baskets. They are learning how to select books, turn the pages carefully, read the whole time and then return the book carefully before selecting a new book. Soon, the students will have their very own book boxes. They will select passion books and just right books for their book boxes. Passion books are books we love, but we may not be able to read independently. Just right books, are books at independent reading levels that will help us become better readers.
As parents, the best thing you can do is to read with your child on a regular basis.
